3 Important Updates From Facebook and Google That Can Change Your Business

June 8, 2012 by Louisa Chan Leave a Comment

3 Important Updates From Facebook and Google This Week That Will Change The Way You Do Business

Local Google+ Page

LINESPACE
A – Facebook release 5 different admin roles with different admin rights.
What does that mean for you?

That means you now can decide how you want to delegate functions and responsibilities for managing your Facebook Business Page while maintaining control of permissions and rights for each of the administrators instead of giving them all  the same level of rights.

This is especially helpful if you outsource your marketing of Facebook to external consultants or agencies.

B – Facebook now allows you to schedule status updates ahead of time – for up to 6 months and in increments of 10 minutes. You need to schedule your updates at least 10 minutes after the time you create the update.
Why is this useful?

There are many good reasons you may want to schedule your status updates (check out this post). If you have been using third party apps to do this you would have noticed that less of your status updates reach your audience.

With the new feature which is from within Facebook, I am going to guess that Facebook will give preference to posts scheduled with this way than those done using third party apps. At the moment, the “reach” count is not shown if you use Buffer or Hootsuite but it is shown when I use Facebook’s internal scheduling function.

C – Google just dropped us a another piece of news after the recent Google Penguin update.

Your Google Local Business Listing will soon be a thing of the past. Yes, Google is retiring its very own Google Local Pages and replacing it with Local Google+ Page. Ok That is a mouthful. But what does that mean to you?

If you are a local business or know someone who has a local business then you will be affected in these ways:

1 -Ranking on local search will take into consideration social factors gathered on your new Google+ Local Page (on top of the existing factors).

2 – Entries on these pages will be indexed by Google, that means Google+ Local Page will help rank your business in search results.

3 – If you have a verified Google Local Business Listing, that will be migrated to a Local Google+ Page soon – you don’t have to do anything about it. But you do need to make sure that all your videos and photoes will be properly migrated over to the new Google+ Page.

4 – If you do not yet have a verified Google Local Business Listing then you will want to claim your Local Google+ Page soonest. At the time of writing this post, having a Google+ Page is not the same as claiming your Local Google+ Page. Eventually Google will merge these 2 pages. For now, things are kind of going through transition.

To set up or claim your Local Google+ Page, you must have a Google account. This appears as a new tab on your Google+ profile or business Page.

5 – You will want to start using Google+ more to for your new page to rank. More on this in a later post, stay tuned!

How To Have New Clients Without Advertising – For Medical And Healthcare Establishments

October 3, 2011 by Louisa Chan Leave a Comment

Social Media for the Medical and Healthcare Professionals

Prospective patients and those who are planning to come to Malaysia for Medical Tourism are using Google to search for clinics and medical centers before they make the trip to the clinic.
A probable scenario would be for the “e-patient” to whip out his tablets (Samsung, iPad or HP) or mobile phone and start “Googling’ for clinics in a certain location.
Research shows that one in three searches has a location or a post code attached to it. In this case, patient may search for “clinic” and a location say “Bangsar” (that’s an affluent township in Kuala Lumpur).
This is probably what it will look like. The first to show up may well be paid advertisement with Google. These are the ones with a highlighted background and the word “Ad” at the top right corner. These appear first as search results.
Then we have the Local Search results. These are given a free online Place Page by Google and they look like this.

Figure 1

These local listings have a lot more information than the organic listing e.g. link to website, tab to call phone numbers, and an entire online page.
Next comes the organic search results of the clinics listed with Google. They do not have the little red teardrop icon and are not linked to any map or tab to call numbers. They look like this:

 Figure 2

People are using search engines to look for information besides checking for recommendations with friends. Hardly anyone I know use Yellow Pages hardcopy or online.
It is interesting to note that listings of local business centers are showing up even without the owners’ knowledge – yes sometimes businesses are not even aware that they have a Google Local Listing.  And it is a pity because they have not made use of the free online asset that Google is handing out to them!
Google crawls the web and scraps relevant information of businesses and puts them into these local listings. These are sometimes not accurate and very often incomplete. As a business establishment owner you will want to.
Make sure that your clinic/medical center/hospital is showing up

  • Make sure that it is showing up on the screen “above the fold” that is without your visitor having to scroll down the tiny mobile screen
  • Hopefully your listing is showing up on Page 1 in the top few places

An equally important question is to ask if your medical center’s listing is populated with accurate and relevant information.  This is so that your prospects find what they are looking for and will want to visit your center and not that of your competitors?
If we look back at Figure 1, and we click on the first listing, “Polikinik Bangsar”, we will be greeted with something that look like this (at the time of this writing):-

Google Place Page for Medical ProfessionalsFigure 3

It has very little information.

So even if some of these clinics are showing up on local searches, prospective clients or patients cannot find much information and they will likely go somewhere else, in search of other medical centers or hospitals.
They may search for the Malaysia Medical Association or Medical Council and hope for a list of medical centers. And this is what they will see when they Google for the “Malaysia Medical Council” on Google Local Search.

While the medical professional has stayed away from actively advertising or canvassing, their clinics, medical centers and establishments are already listed on Google Local Searches – by Google.
The concern here is to optimize your online listing given by Google so you have a constant stream of new patients. You will also want some good patient reviews as social proof.
You can start owning your online listing today and see more visitors coming to your centers. Additional Resources

On Page Optimization Alone Does Not Guarantee Search Engine Ranking Nor Traffic

July 7, 2011 by Louisa Chan Leave a Comment

Businesses and individuals are beginning to set up Facebook Fan Pages and Google Place Listing after reading about their effectiveness in generating free and new traffic.
I am glad to see many taking action to make use of new and digital media for free and viral traffic. However there are 2 things that I like to highlight:
You need to know how to set it up correctly. Any high school kid will be able to set up a Facebook Page or a Google Listing; it is no rocket science. However, not everyone will know how to set it up correctly so that it is search engine friendly.
And even less will have a strategy for how businesses can make use of the newly set up pages and how those tie in with the total marketing strategy.
Setting up the page remains the easiest part of the equation. Using the correct strategy for your business niche and market will require some expertise and that is where you can tap into your marketing agent’s expertise.

Dynamic Nature of Organic Search Requires On-Going Optimization.

Another point to note is that ranking and positioning is dynamic in the organic search engine world. Having your business listing on page 1 today does not guarantee that you can retain that position if you do not continue to optimize your page – especially when your competitors are doing so.

Nothing stays constant in a dynamic world. So while having a presence is getting into the game, it is only the first step. To consistently showing up on searches will take on-going effort. With a little help from your marketing agent you will be able to achieve that and tap into free Google and Facebook traffic.
Feel free to pass this on to your friends and remember to leave me a comment or two. You can also get my Free report on how to Master Social Media in 5 Easy Steps Using 1 Hour A Week here.
