Pinterest Updates: Pinterest Verified Account, Terms and Etiquette

November 1, 2012 by Louisa Chan Leave a Comment

Updates For Pinterest Users

PInterest UpdatesAre you using Pinterest for your marketing?

If not, you may want to check it out. It is a great medium for visual marketing and it can help generate traffic as well as link juice for your business.

If you are already a Pinterest user then here are a few recent updates that you will want to know about.

Pinterest Verified Account

Pinterest now allows you to have verified ownership of your account. It links your Pinterest account with your top level domain (your website) as shown in the diagram below.

With that you now have your full web address on your Pinterest “Profile Page” – with a clickable link to your website. A very useful way for others to find out more about you and your services.

This is great. Besides allowing others to check you out online it provides a direct and live link to your website. This is way better than just having them link to your Facebook or Twitter accounts. Talk about  for cross promotion!

How To Verify Your Pinterest Account?
Pinterest provides very detailed instructions on how you can do that so I won’t repeat it here. You can refer to resources here.

When your account is successfully verified, a red check mark will appear right next to your web address (as shown above).

If you don’t see this on your profile account yet, don’t worry. It is being rolled out in stages.

Reporting On Pinterest
Pinterest_Privacy

If you find inappropriate pins or if you feel uncomfortable with some users, you can report either the pins or the person to Pinterest.

To do that you will need to go to the person’s profile page. To the right of the photo you will now see a little flag.

When you hover over the flag you will see options for reporting as well as blocking.

As you can see from the diagram here, there are different reasons why you may want to report this to Pinterest.

Obviously, any comments or images that are “deemed to be hateful, violent, harmful, abusive, racially or ethnically offensive, defamatory, etc.” are not to be encouraged. Pictures relating to “harm, death, disability or disfigurement to yourself, other people or animals are also prohibited”.

Blocking On Pinterest
There is also an option to block out people at the bottom section.

Blocking a person will disable the person from re-pinning, liking or commenting on your pins.

However, the person will not be notified that you have blocked him – until he realizes that he cannot seem to respond to your pins.

Pinterest is fast gaining momentum as a social media platform. Use it wisely and within its terms and let it be another marketing channel working for you. Be respectful and observe online etiquette. Seeking short term gain while spamming will only put your account at risk.

If you like to have more tips on using Pinterest, here’s a guide that explains what Pinterest is and how you can make use of it.

How To Add A Pinterest Pin It Button On Your Website

How To Install Pinterest Pin It Button On Your Website

Pinterest ImageEncourage Pinning From Your Web Site

If you like visitors pinning images from your WordPress site you can easily install a plug in that will display the “Pin It” button onto your blog site, pages and posts.

There are a few plug ins that you can use, among them, the WordPress Pinterest Pin It Button or this plugin.

If you are not using a Word Press site, then you can follow the steps below to put a “Pin It Button” on any pages or posts.

You can go to www.Pinterest.com/about/goodies and scroll down till you see “Pin It Button for Website”. Just add in the web address of the post or page where you want the Pin It Button (http://yourdomain.com/post) as well as the web address of the image to be pinned (http://yourdomain.co/image).  Then add in a few words for the description of this pin.

Pinterest_Button

Once you have done that, some codes will appear below the description. Follow the instruction and copy these 2 sets of codes to your blog site. One where you want the “Pin It Button” to appear [on your blog post] and the other one at the end of your post, just before the </body> tags.

As you can see there is no coding involved at all. It is going to the right place, grabbing some codes and putting them on your blog site. Not complicated is it?

And just like that you have your pin it button on your blog post or pages so any visitors can pin images from your site whether they have Pin It Bookmarklet installed on their browsers or not.

Pinterest

You can also add in text that says something like “click on the Pin It Button if you like this on your ping board” so visitors know what to do.  You would of course want to make sure that you have high resolution attractive images for others to want to repin. So now every one can rein your images whether they have the Pin It Bookmarklet or not.

If you like to refer to how to get the Pinterest Bookmarket installed, here’s a video that will walk you through it. If you have any questions just leave them at the comment section below.

Resources for the Week 31st August 2012 – Visual Social Media And Closing More Sales

Petronas Twin Tower in Malaysia
Hello There! Welcome to your weekly update with tips and inspirations for growing your business!

It’s “Merdeka” Day and I wish Beautiful Malaysia a Happy Birthday!

And for those in the States here’s wishing you a great Memorial Day!

This has been a very happening week. Clients and new friends downloaded both the free Pinterest and LinkedIn report and really took action.

They started experimenting with the tools and raised some more questions (which I will address below).

We also got queries on the Personalized LinkedIn Profile Optimization  project that we offer to our subscribers and circle of friends.

In today’s edition, I’ll provide some additional resources on business trends and tips as well as address some of the more commonly raised questions raised:

1 – How do I pin?
Since many of us are visual learners and prefer diagrams or video walk throughs, I decided to do a short video to show the 3 different ways we can go about pinning on Pinterest.

2 – Is there a way I can schedule my Pinterest posts?
You bet. Most of us have contacts and friends from all over the world and we want to post and pin at times where our contacts are awake or are most likely to spend time on their Pinterest accounts. PingGraphy allows you to do that.

3 – How Do I Make Nice Images of Quotes or Text?
ShareAsImage (used to be called Pin A Quote) allows you to make nice images out of inspiring quotes or captivating text that you want to share on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest. There is a free basic version and a more robust paid version

How To Add Pinterest Pin It Bookmarklet So You Can Pin From Any Websites

August 31, 2012 by Louisa Chan 2 Comments

A Pinterest Bookmarklet Allows You To Pin From Any Site

Using Pinterest For BusinessNow that you have set up your Pinterest account you want to start pinning images onto your various pinboards.

Pin by Re-Pinning. You can do that by re-pinning images that you see on others’ board or you can pin images, infographs and videos that you see on websites if they have the Pin It Button installed.

Pin Using Pin It Buttons. Some websites have added Pin It Button (like the one you see here) onto their website and blog posts. So if you click on the Pin It buttons on the sites you visit it you’ll be able to pin the image from these websites.

Pin Using Bookmarlets. Some sites have not installed the Pin It Buttons yet. So in case you are wondering how you can pin from these site, don’t worry. The fastest and easiest way to Pin images from any website is to make use of a Pin It Bookmarklet. These can sit on your tool bar or you can save them as bookmarks or favourites.

This is something very easily done. Depending on which browser you are using to surf the internet (whether it is Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorere) the steps are slightly different. And I have made a short video to walk you through this step by step so you don’t have to feel lost and can start pinning in 5 minutes!

Resources & Tips: Aug 24 2012

August 25, 2012 by Louisa Chan Leave a Comment

Happy Friday! And to those celebrating Ramadan, Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Traffic in town has been fantastic this past week as many have traveled out of the city. But in case you are still in holiday mood, it’s time to get ready for work again!
Between resting and celebrating, I managed to slot in a Social Media Seminar in town this week.  Here are some videos if you like to see what we did! (seminar was conducted in Mandarin but participants shared in many languages! Those multi talented people at Hai-O are fantastic).
This week I received a number of questions concerning Pinterest. I am including the more commonly asked questions here in case you are also wondering about them:
1 – Do I really need a Pinterest account?
Pinterest allows your to show case your business visually and it’s easy to use. Pretty product images get shared easily (and they go viral quickly). Pinterest is generating a lot of traffic and growing at an exponential rate. It is something worth watching out for if images of your service offerings and product help your target market understand you better.
Most people are visual and are drawn to images. The most viewed and shared posts on Facebook are photos. Lately many are saving quotes as image and those are showing up as more attractive and are getting more views and shares.
Instagram and Pinterest are popular because visuals are attractive and there is no need to compose text. Pinterest makes is easy for your audience to share. So if you like what you see, click “repin”, “like”, or “share” and that seems to catch on with many people. Plus who can resist things nice and beautiful?
2 – How do I set up my Business Pinterest Account?
Same way you set up a Personal Account (step by step instructions with diagram) are given in this guide. The question to ask is: do you need 2 accounts? Pinterest is a lifestyle social media platform. By pinning photos and images of things that interest you, you inject personality into your business.
3 – What is the difference between a Business Account and a Personal one?
At the moment, Pinterest does not make any distinction between the 2 kinds of accounts.
4 – How do I make sure others credit the image back to me?
The answer is you can’t. It is common etiquette to give credit where credit is due. So in repinning and sharing, we accredit the source. But there are some who may not follow this etiquette when using Pinterest. What we can do is to ensure that we are nice!
Some have not yet heard about Pinterest. Most find it quite interesting and would like to find out more about it. If you are interested to find out more about Pinterest I have a free report that’ll tell you how to get started with Pinterest. Feel free to download it, print it, book mark it, like it, share it or comment on it and let me know if this is helpful.
