“To be successful, you need to have your heart in your business and to have your business in your heart”. Love that quote by Thomas Watson.
A response says what I need is luck instead.
So do I need luck or heart?
“Luck is preparation meeting opportunity“.
Says Oprah Winfrey.
Have you been “lucky” enough to be discovered by journalists and magazine editors for interviews on topics you care about?
Have you been “lucky” enough to be found by business radio station looking for candidates to interview on a cause you champion?
I have and I am thankful for all that. Here’s my take:
Where there’s heart, there will be actions taken that will create luck as a byproduct.
Craft Your Opportunity
I believe you need to position yourself well and create your own luck. I don’t think luck happens randomly to anyone. It does seem to happen to those actively working out plans on a consistent basis, waiting for the right moment and opportunity.
Was J.K Rowling Lucky?
Anyone who has read her biography would know the hardship and pain she went through as well as the training and experience she has had prior to being “discovered”. It was not an overnight success but an enduring journey where she kept working at the thing she is passionate about: writing. That’s where heart meets fate.
Time To Get Ready For Opportunities
If you have been faithfully creating quality content, posting on social media platforms and blogging, it is time to generate some credible publicity (you can do that easily; press releases come to mind) and get your brand ready to be discovered. The successful ones are working on building assets so they are ready when the right chance comes along. They are not waiting around for things to happen to them. That is designing and implementing your own destiny and choosing your own path.
Have You Prepared Your Brand To Be Media Ready?
If you have a media kit or a press kit, you are prepared and ready when the right person or media finds you. Press releases, books and speaking engagements have helped gotten me TV and Radio interviews which in turns bring more coverage and business connections and dealings.
I do not have any giant or great influencer to lean on or to associate with but I can share with you that if you plan ahead and are willing to put in the work, it will pay off. I am not saying this is easy, but it can and did happen for many people.
To position yourself for these opportunities, here are something you can do for a start:
- Start optimizing your website
- Start branding your business so it is recognizable on different platforms
- Continue to put out valuable information that educates or entertains
- Prepare business promotional material (like the one shown above) that tells of who you are and what solution you bring
- Have that in different media: video, image, text etc, ready to be shared
- Be ready to share about your offering and not be shy about it – when the right opportunity arises.
We can’t leave our journey and destiny to luck or fate. You’ll need to create your own chances of success and design your own journey. Have heart will succeed. Keep at it, it will pay off.
