What’s Your Data Back Up Plan? We’ve reached the last week of March and it’s going to be a short week for some of us. Planned your short break over the weekend yet?
I will be doing some spring cleaning this weekend (referring to my data and folders) as my external hard drive crashed just recently (my heart almost stopped beating).
I am hoping to recover some of the data (awaiting analysis from the data recovery center) so I can start re-organising my files and folders.
I had been diligently backing up my data onto the external hard drive thinking that my data will safe.
I thought I was taking good precaution. Unfortunately, that was not good enough. I was Not prepared to find that my external hard disk had bad sectors and that I could not access my files!
And this has to happen just when I was planning to launch my new Rapid Business Growth Program of course!
Have A Better Data Back Up Plan
Thank goodness I found a data recovery center that can help me salvage some of my data at a reasonable price (but it is still a high unfactored-for cost).
What’s the lesson learned? I will be having 2 levels of back up from now on. One onto my new external hard drive and another in the cloud.
There are a few options for free secure storage in the cloud. You can use DropBox (gives 2G of free storage), Mozy (gives 2G of free storage), Google Drive (gives 5G of free storage) or Copy (gives 5G of free storage).
They give free accounts with limited storage and then you need to pay for upgrades or do referrals to get more free storage. Right now Copy is giving 5G for each referral, that’s the most generous I have seen.
Lessons Applied To Daily Living
What’s you back up plan for your job? 30 years ago employees worked hard and retired form the one company they worked for.
These days many change jobs at least five times. Some go in search of greener pastures. Others change job due to company wide “downsizing”, retrenchment or forced early retirement.
Is there job security? Hmm. Not even if you are good at what you do.
I was in a Fortune 500 company when the entrie IT Consulting Department was given the big envelop. It was a corporate decision, nothing to do with how good your performance is. I was fortunate enough to have been just transferred out to another team in another department.
So What’s the Plan?
If you want better control of your life, your best bet is to run your own company. It doesn’t have to be a big company, but you do want to be in charge and have control.
Some choose to be self-employed by offering services. Tutors, Therapists and Coaches fall into this category.
This is a good start. Start something on the side while you still have a job and then start planning your exit strategy.
Own A Business: This is not the same as being self-employed which ties you down to the business. If you are self-employed, you will only have income when you work. If you stop working (say if you choose to go on holiday, or don’t feel well) you won’t have income.
Running a business sometimes start with employing yourself but it often grows into something bigger where you can take yourself out of the equation (to different degrees) and still have some income.
